Si trovavano lungo le\u00a0navate laterali arredi marmorei preziosi e ricchissimi. Forse esisteva un tesoro\u00a0custodito all\u2019interno di una cappella laterale 1. L\u2019intero edificio fu quasi\u00a0totalmente distrutto dal passaggio della lava del 1794, che risparmi\u00f2 il campanile\u00a0e parte delle strutture ipogee. Per secoli leggendo i testi della bibliografia dotta\u00a0della citt\u00e0, si \u00e8 pensato che della chiesa non era restato nulla. Ma nel 1975 i primi\u00a0studi speleologici 2, condotti proprio negli ambienti ipogei dell\u2019attuale chiesa\u00a0portarono alla luce importanti vestigia di quell\u2019antico edificio.\u00a0L\u2019attuale chiesa, ricostruita per volere dei torresi e per l\u2019amore del Beato\u00a0Vincenzo Romano, fu progettata dell&#8217;architetto Ignazio Di Nardo.
