In the warm seasons of the year\u00a0(that is to say, for nearly seven months out of the twelve)\u00a0it is the favourite promenade and lounging place of\u00a0the Neapolitan bourgeoisie and poorer classes of citizens, who are but too happy to escape from the hot\u00a0pent-up air of their narrow and tortuous streets and\u00a0lanes. On the Molo they can hear the cooling plash of\u00a0the sea upon the rocks, and inhale the pure \u00a0vening air.\u00a0And, as if this were not pleasure and bliss enough, under\u00a0that glorious sky, and with the fairest view upon earth\u00a0spread before and around, hither resort singers and conjurors, mountebanks and improvisator!, men with learned\u00a0pigs, and men with dogs that can tell fortunes, to afford\u00a0amusement to the promenaders and loungers. The\u00a0vividness of my impressions, which lays the whole scene\u00a0before my eyes, makes me use the present tense when I\u00a0ought rather to use the past. I am told that the busy\u00a0and rnerry Molo has been almost ungarnished, of late\u00a0years, of the men and things which made its merriment;\u00a0and that a police far more ruthless than that which sometimes wageth war in our streets against Punch, hath\u00a0swept away Policinella, Canta-Storia, Ciarlatano, pig and\u00a0dog, together with every other object that used to raise\u00a0a boisterous laugh.
