\u00c9 il 19 ottobre del 1767 e gi\u00e0 da qualche giorno, nell\u2019aria quasi rarefatta e tersa in mattinate fresche e luminose, a Napoli ed in tutti i paesi della costa si percepiva l\u2019imminenza di un\u2019eruzione. Il popolo vesuviano era ben avvezzo ai prodromi e questi erano numerosi gi\u00e0 dai primi del mese. Pietro Fabris aveva appena compiuto da poco ventisette anni ed aveva sufficiente esperienza accumulata in botteghe illustri della citt\u00e0, per poter tradurre le emozioni che impregnavano quell\u2019evento, con i colori della tela. Visse l\u2019eruzione di persona e forse questo quadro che rende appieno i momenti salienti dell\u2019eruzione, gli procur\u00f2 quella giusta fama che lo avrebbe portato ad diventare il primo illustratore di una delle pi\u00f9 importanti opere di vulcanologia del secolo XVIII: 56 tempere che descrivevano fra il 1776 ed il 1779, i vulcani del Regno delle due Sicilie, commissionate da Lord William Hamilton. Il quadro in oggetto, tuttavia pu\u00f2 essere definito a giusta ragione una vera sintesi dei fenomeni e rende in maniera speciale, sul piano tecnico, sia la fenomenologia che la topografia.<\/p>\n
