Fu inizialmente un pittore e poi anche un musicista. In questa seconda veste si afferm\u00f2 dopo che la critica aveva apprezzato la sua arte pittorica. Gran parte della sua produzione ebbe ad oggetto paesaggi marini, porti, antichi velieri, vedute naturalistiche, ecc. Aveva appena 40 anni quando fu riconosciuto come il miglior pittore naturalista di Spagna, ottenendo, nel 1901, la Encomienda de Isabel la Cat\u00f3lica. Da giovane Mart\u00ednez Abades visse per due anni a Roma (1888-1890) grazie a una borsa di studio della Asemblea Provincial de Oviedo. Roma, col suo patrimonio antico, era il luogo ideale per un giovane studente di belle arti, cos\u00ec come il resto d\u2019Italia.
