John George Brown, morto nel 1913, era un pittore di New York molto apprezzato\u00a0 dal pubblico americano per lo stile personale che fondeva realismo e bellezza ideale e i ritratti dei bambini di strada, dalla potente impronta sentimentale, diedero a Brownla
\ngloria di pittore di genere pi\u00f9 celebrato nell\u2019America di fine Ottocento. Lo stesso tema fu caro anche a Michele Falanga e forse le opere di Brown furono di ispirazione al pittore torrese. Molti dipinti dei due artisti rappresentano infatti soggetti comuni: il piccolo lustrascarpe con la cassetta e gli arnesi del mestiere, un fanciullo e il suo cane, dei bimbi con le canne da pesca,\u00a0 ragazzetti che giocano a carte o a dadi, il bambino che vende giornali, ma anche vecchi seduti insieme a \u201cfilosofeggiare\u201d o unsuonatore (il violinista di Brown e il chitarrista di Falanga).<\/p>\n
