Rassegna iconografica dei Pompei. Le immagini che accompagnano il testo sono di grande rilievo, in particolare nei disegni planimetrici che risultano essere di grande qualit\u00e0 e coerenti alle parametrazioni attuali. Completano la rassegna iconografica dell’opara del Goro, alcune vedute, con personaggi in costume, che risentono molto del periodo manieristico e romantico. Anche qui, si ripropone lo spirito del Grand Tour che tanta gente aveva attratto e convogliato verso le terre distrutte dall’eruzione pliniana e che tanta eco aveva avuto in quell’Europa, politicamente instabile. Un ritorno sui luoghi di una memoria storica mai sopita, mai completamente paga di conoscere e scoprire. Ritornare in questi luoghi arsi dalle “fiamme del Vesuvio” era come rivivere l’immane catastrofe. Fascino, orrore, disperazione e gioie si affastellano, come sentimenti nell’anima del viaggiatore e tra i tanti Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, che nel suo Viaggio in Italia a riguardo scrive: \u201cE\u2019 chiaro, se si pensa quanto dista la citt\u00e0 dal Vesuvio, che la massa vulcanica seppellitrice non pot\u00e9 esser spinta fin qui da un\u2019esplosione n\u00e9 da un turbine di vento; c\u2019\u00e8 da pensare piuttosto che lapilli e cenere abbiano volteggiato per un certo tempo a guisa di nuvole, finch\u00e9 si abbatterono sulla sventurata localit\u00e0… Ci detergemmo lo spirito dall\u2019impressione straordinaria, e fino a un certo punto deprimente di quella citt\u00e0 mummificata, consumando un frugale pasto sotto il pergolato d\u2019una piccola osteria in riva al mare, deliziati dal cielo azzurro, dalle luci e dai bagliori marini, e nella speranza, il giorno che questo posticino sar\u00e0 tutto coperto di pampini, di ritrovarci ancora qui per godere le medesime delizie”.<\/p>\n
