Verr\u00e0 pi\u00f9 volte citata in bibliografia; ad essa si ispireranno anche grandi storici dell&#8217;archeologia locale. Sar\u00e0 un vero e proprio modello di ispirazione, dal quale in tanti attinsero, ritenendolo un documento quasi imprescindibile per lo studio della storia eruttiva del Vesuvio, per lo studio della storia del territorio e dell&#8217;archeologia.<\/p>\n<p>Il testo che accompagna la stampa in francese \u00e8 tratto da\u00a0<em>Voyage pittoresque, historique, et geographique de Rome \u00e0 Naples et leurs environs<\/em>, di Andr\u00e9e Pizzala. Napoli 1823-24<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>PLAN TOPOGRAPHIQUE D\u2019UNE PARTIE DE L\u2019ANCIEN CRAT\u00c8RE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">La disposition de la partie orientale de l\u2019ancien crat\u00e8re ou Golfe, o\u00f9 \u00e9tait situ\u00e9e Pompei, pr\u00e9sente des variations, qui presque toutes sont produites par les terribles effets du Volcan.\u00a0La mer qui maintenant est \u00e0 plus de deux milles de Pompei, avant sa destruction arrivait aux pieds de la colline, et rasant les remparts de la ville au midi, s\u2019\u00e9tendait le long du rivage jusqu\u2019\u00e0 Stabia; l\u2019ancienne source du Sarno \u00e9tait \u00e0 l\u2019 endroit appel\u00e9 aujourd\u2019hui la Valle, c\u2019est ici que le Port se formait, et rendait fleurissante la ville par son commerce. Non loin\u00a0se trouvaient les marais Pomp\u00e9iens, les salines d\u2019Hercule, les carri\u00e8res de la pierre-ponce, et des pierres \u00e0 huile. Du c\u00f4t\u00e9 oppos\u00e9 la mer arrivait jusqu\u2019au pays qu\u2019aujourd \u2019hui s\u2019appele Torre dell\u2019Annunziata, touchait ensuite R\u00e9sin\u00e9, Herculanum et le rivage de Leucopetra jusqu\u2019\u00e0 Naples. Tout ce que nous venons de dire parait s\u2019accorder aux assertions de Live, Seneque, Strabon,\u00a0et Pline et \u00e0 l\u2019examen des mati\u00e8res, dont est compos\u00e9e actuellement la plaine , puisqu\u2019il ne faut qu\u2019enfoncer tr\u00e8s peu sous terre le pieu pour trouver des br\u00e8ches, sables, et eaux saum\u00e2\u00a0tres, qui prouvent la r\u00e9elle existence des choses \u00e9nonc\u00e9es.<br \/>\nPompei avait quatre portes, dont les moins endommag\u00e9es sont la Nolana, Isiaca et, la Erculana savoir, celle qui aboutit \u00e0 la rue des tombeaux , mais on y parvenait par\u00a0trois principaux chemins, celui du cot\u00e9 de l\u2019ovest rasait la mer et conduisait \u00e0 Oplonti aujourd\u2019hui Torre dell\u2019Annunziala , \u00e0 Herculanum et \u00e0 Naples ; par le second on allait \u00e0\u00a0Nola, et par le troisi\u00e8me \u00e0 Nocera et \u00e0 Stabia . Son p\u00e9rim\u00e8tre, ainsi que nous le d\u00e9montrent les remparts d\u00e9couverts, \u00e9taient de forme elliptique, dont le plus grand axe, depuis la\u00a0porte Herculanea jusq\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019Amphith\u00e9\u00e2tre, est de la longueur de 800 pas g\u00e9om\u00e9triques et le moindre, savoir de la porte Nolana au Quartier des soldats, 400 pas \u00e0 pen-pr\u00e9s. Elle i\u00e9tait entour\u00e9e par de bons remparts , de distance en distance garnis de tours quarr\u00e9es, ce qui donne une id\u00e9e des fortifications des anciens; au surplus la nature du sol, o\u00f9 elle \u00e9tait construite contribuait \u00e0 la rendre tr\u00e8s forte, \u00e9tant plac\u00e9e sur un amas de lave tr\u00e8s ancienne, qui en forme de promontoire domine toute la plaine, enfin la mer la bordait d\u2019 un c\u00f4t\u00e9 et un fleuve de l\u2019autre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\">LE V\u00c9SUVE<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On a pu voir \u00e0 l \u2019Aper\u00e7u historique de Pompei, que le V\u00e9suve rest\u00e9 presque dans l\u2019oubli pendant plusieurs si\u00e8cles , se r\u00e9veilla tout d \u2019un coup 1 annee 79 de l\u2019 \u00c8re Vulgaire et couvrit tous les pays qui l&#8217;environnaient, de crasse, pierres, cendres et laves liquides et enflamm\u00e9es. Il r\u00e9p\u00e9ta en 47 1 une de ces terribles \u00e9ruptions qui semblent menacer la fin du monde, \u00e9ruption d\u00e9taill\u00e9e d\u2019une mani\u00e8re aussi effroyable que v\u00e9ridique par Marcellino et, d\u00e8s lors n \u2019a plus discontinu\u00e9; une inscription existante\u00e0 Ponici pr\u00e9s Granatello qui s\u2019exprime ainsi: Posteri, posleri, vestra res agitur, nous fait entrevoir la grande frayeur dont furent justement p\u00e9n\u00e9tr\u00e9s les Napolitains; les laves du V\u00e9suve arriv\u00e8rent presq\u2019au pont de la Madelaine et mena\u00e7aient du dernier d\u00e9sastre la belle ville de la Sir\u00e8ne. Il seroit tr\u00e8s ennuyeux si on voulait d\u00e9tailler toutes les \u00e9ruptions de ce Volcan et les malheurs qu\u2019 il a occasion\u00e9 aux belles contr\u00e9es qui l\u2019environnent; cependant quel est celui parmi nos lecteurs qui pourra\u00a0hlier celle arriv\u00e9e au mois d\u2019octobre 1822, qui parviut par ses t\u00e9n\u00e8bres \u00e0 nous \u00f4ter le jour, et qui par une pluie continuelle de petites pierres et de cendre semblait nous pr\u00e9dire notre<br \/>\nderni\u00e8re heure?
