Il 1799, ultimo del XVIII secolo, si apr\u00ec per Napoli nell\u2019attesa di un\u00a0rivolgimento politico-istituzionale a cui non era storicamente avvezza se non per\u00a0quella breve parentesi del 1647 nota come Repubblica di Masaniello. In quell\u2019inizio d\u2019anno truppe francesi dell\u2019esercito di Bonaparte sarebbero entrate nella capitale del\u00a0regno e avrebbero dato sostegno, come era accaduto in altre parti d\u2019Italia, a coloro\u00a0che agognavano la nascita di una Repubblica. I rivoluzionari napoletani, ispirati dai\u00a0principi della scuola illuministica e riformistica napoletana da Galiani a Genovesi a
\nFilangieri, ritenevano che fosse ormai giunto il momento di scardinare l\u2019assolutismo\u00a0borbonico che concentrava tutti i poteri nella persona del sovrano senza il controllo di\u00a0altri organi: essi vagheggiavano una Repubblica Napoletana, una nazione di liberi cittadini che potessero partecipare alla vita politica attraverso un \u201cgoverno\u00a0democratico sulle basi della libert\u00e0 ed uguaglianza\u201d (Proclami e Sanzioni della\u00a0Repubblica Napoletana, raccolti da C. Colletta, 1863). Ma agli ideali si\u00a0accompagnarono anche errori politici.<\/p>\n
