In uno dei numeri scorsi di questa rivista si \u00e8 accennato al fatto che la popolarit\u00e0 del romanzo The Last Days of Pompeii (1834) di Bulwer Lytton ha finito per far dimenticare un nutrito numero di opere letterarie su Pompei, in versi e in prosa, e di provenienza sia americana che britannica, che lo avevano preceduto, e i cui echi \u00e8 possibile risentire tra le pagine del Lytton. Tra queste opere va segnalato un lungo racconto pubblicato nel 1830 a Boston, dalla casa editrice Gray e Bowen, dal titolo The Vestal, or a Tale of Pompeii. Le scarsissime, per non dire nulle, notizie che si posseggono sull’autore di questo racconto, sono compensate dal denso apparato di note che corredano il volumetto, le quali permettono di ricostruire l’identit\u00e0 di uno scrittore in possesso di notevole cultura classica, di conoscenze di prima mano del mondo romano, della situazione degli scavi, e dei pi\u00f9 recenti (ai suoi tempi) studi su Pompei e sulla sua storia. Come l’autore chiarisce nella prefazione,\u00a0 egli \u00e8 \u201centrato nei penetralia\u201d degli ambienti e dei luoghi da lui raccontati, e si \u00e8 limitato ad inventare solo la descrizione del tempio di Vesta, e delle catacombe, che ha trasferito a Pompei, dopo aver visitato quelle di Napoli. Le altre libert\u00e0 che si \u00e8 preso riguardano la cronologia, perch\u00e9 ha spostato all’ 81 d. C. l’eruzione che avvenne, invece, come si sa, nel 79, in modo da far combaciare la vicenda centrale del suo racconto con la grande persecuzione dei cristiani iniziatasi sotto l’imperatore Domiziano. Interessanti anche alcuni passaggi della sua introduzione, specialmente quello in cui egli spiega la particolare suggestione su di lui operata dallo scenario pompeiano:

\nwhich the sleeping princess, who had wounded her hand with a spindle, with her own court was put to sleep; and when, after the lapse of many years, the enchantment was broken, they all awoke as young as they were when they first slept, and all instantly recommenced their avocations that occupied them at the moment of the enchantment, unconscious of the lapse of years, or of the changes of the world around them.<\/p>\n
