Era, come si vede, un&#8217;ennesima riproposizione del mito dell&#8217; \u201cEbreo Errante\u201d. Questo mito, come \u00e8 altrettanto risaputo, ha alle spalle una tradizione lunghissima, che affonda le sue radici nel Medioevo, ed attraversa tutte le culture nazionali, assumendo fisionomie diverse. Nella sua versione classica, il mito vuole che l&#8217;ebreo che schern\u00ec Cristo sul percorso verso il Golgota, fu per questo atto condannato all&#8217;immortalit\u00e0, e costretto a vagare eternamente per il mondo, fino alla \u201cSeconda Venuta\u201d del Cristo. Nelle varie culture nazionali, questa figura di uomo immortale in continua peregrinazione per il mondo, \u00e8 conosciuta con nomi diversi: Ahasvero, Buttadeus, etc. Nel nostro testo assume quello pi\u00f9 comunemente noto come Cartaphilus, che secondo la leggenda sarebbe stato il portiere del tribunale di Ponzio Pilato.
